Missed a Dose of Finasteride? What to Do

The short answer:
- If you remember the same day → take it as soon as you remember
- If it’s nearly time for the next dose → skip the missed dose; take the next one as scheduled
- Never double up to make up for a missed dose
Will One Missed Dose Affect My Hair Results?
No. Finasteride has a half-life of approximately 6–8 hours in younger men and up to 8 hours in older men (BPH doses). However, DHT suppression is maintained for longer than the plasma half-life because of the slow turnover of bound 5α-reductase enzyme. Missing one dose will not meaningfully change your DHT levels or result in measurable hair loss.
What does matter is long-term adherence. Studies show that men who take finasteride consistently for 5+ years have substantially better outcomes than those who stop and restart. Hair loss accelerates when finasteride is discontinued entirely.
Tips for Not Missing Doses
- Pair it with an existing daily habit (morning coffee, brushing teeth)
- Use a pill organizer or phone reminder
- Keep a spare dose at work if you take it at a fixed time each day
