Is finasteride available on the NHS?

Routes to a private finasteride prescription for hair loss

1. Private GP consultation

Any UK-registered GP can prescribe finasteride privately. A private prescription is written on a standard FP10PCD form or headed notepaper and can be dispensed at any UK registered pharmacy. Typical cost: £50–£100 for the consultation.

2. NHS dermatologist referral

If your GP refers you to an NHS dermatologist for hair loss, the dermatologist may prescribe finasteride. However, dispensing is typically on a private basis because the indication is not NHS-funded for AGA.

3. CQC-regulated online prescription services

Several UK online pharmacies and telehealth platforms offer finasteride following an online medical questionnaire and/or video consultation. To be legitimate they must:

Be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
Prescriptions must be issued by a GMC-registered prescriber
Display the NHS-approved online pharmacy logo (green cross verified by the General Pharmaceutical Council)
Follow MHRA guidance on prescribing POMs online

NHS prescription charge exemptions

For BPH prescriptions (5 mg) dispensed on the NHS, you will not pay a prescription charge if you:

Are aged 60 or over
Hold a valid HC2 or HC3 certificate
Are on a qualifying benefit (Universal Credit, ESA, etc.)
Have a Prepayment Certificate (PPC) — recommended if you take multiple regular medications

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a foreign prescription in the UK?

No. Prescriptions issued outside the UK (including EU prescriptions since Brexit) are generally not valid in UK pharmacies. You need a prescription from a GMC-registered prescriber. If you were prescribed finasteride abroad, you will need a new UK prescription.

Can my GP prescribe finasteride for hair loss on a private basis?
