Both finasteride and minoxidil are MHRA-licensed for male pattern hair loss in the UK. They work differently and can be used together. For most men, finasteride is considered the more effective single agent.

NICE CKS (Alopecia, 2023) specifically notes that combination therapy with finasteride plus minoxidil is more effective than either agent alone for moderate-to-severe AGA. This is supported by two well-designed RCTs:

Khandpur 2002: Combination finasteride + minoxidil 5% produced significantly greater hair count increase than either agent alone at 12 months.
Hu 2015: Combination therapy showed superior global photographic assessment vs monotherapy at 24 weeks.

Can I buy finasteride over the counter in the UK like Regaine?

No. Finasteride is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) in the UK. Minoxidil 5% (Regaine and generics) is a General Sale List (GSL) medicine — available without any prescription at UK pharmacies, supermarkets, and online. You need a valid UK prescription to obtain finasteride legally.

Is Regaine the same as minoxidil?

Regaine is the leading brand of minoxidil for AGA in the UK. Regaine 5% extra strength foam is the most widely used formulation. Unbranded generic minoxidil 5% solutions are also available and contain the same active ingredient at the same concentration. Regaine Men’s regular strength (2%) is less effective than 5%.

Can I use both finasteride and Regaine at the same time?

Yes. They work by different mechanisms and there are no clinically significant interactions between oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. NICE CKS notes that combination therapy is more effective than either agent alone. Apply minoxidil to a dry scalp, then take finasteride orally — timing does not need to be coordinated.
