Finasteride for Athletes

Finasteride for Athletes: Performance, Muscle & Doping Rules

Bottom line: Most recreational gym-goers can take finasteride without meaningful impact on muscle or strength. The modest testosterone rise from finasteride is unlikely to affect performance in non-drug-tested sports. Competitive athletes subject to WADA testing should note finasteride’s historical use as a masking agent — though it is no longer on the prohibited list, athletes in WADA-governed sports should confirm current status.

Effect on Testosterone and Muscle

Finasteride raises total and free testosterone by approximately 10–15% while reducing DHT by ~65%. DHT contributes to muscle androgen signaling, but the magnitude of DHT reduction at the 1 mg dose is not expected to produce clinically significant changes in muscle mass or strength in most men. Studies of 5-AR inhibitors in the PLESS trial and other settings did not identify clinically significant body composition changes at these doses.

WADA and Anti-Doping Status

Note for competitive athletes: Finasteride was previously included on the WADA prohibited list as a masking agent (for anabolic steroids). It was removed in 2009. However, anti-doping rules change — always verify current status at wada-ama.org before competing and consult your sport’s governing body.
